Dr. Cory M. Valley, a biotechnology and chemistry associate at the Grüneberg and Myers firm, has an expansive command of the practice of patent law in pharmaceutical, biotechnology, and chemical fields.

Multi-national corporations, Fortune 100 companies, non-profit organizations, startups, and educational institutions trust Dr. Valley with global patent portfolio development and intellectual property management. Previous responsibilities acting as in-house patent counsel, directly advising executives and board members on competitive patent landscapes, equip Dr. Valley with a comprehensive perspective on patent strategy. The broad scope of Dr. Valley’s experience has served clients by enhancing his understanding of their current and future objectives.

Dr. Valley’s practice covers freedom-to-operate opinions, due diligence, patent landscapes, patent valuation, patentability opinions, and patent application drafting and prosecution. He has managed global prosecution of multiple patent portfolios, evaluated patent portfolios as part of due diligence for acquisition and licensing, and provided freedom-to-operate analysis for clients’ products. He has secured valuable coverage for numerous companies in drafting, filing, and prosecuting patent applications. Beyond his patent work, Dr. Valley has also prepared, filed, and prosecuted copyright and trademark applications.

With a research background in molecular genetics and microbiology, Dr. Valley especially handles patent issues in biotechnology, pharmaceutical, and chemical technologies. Dr. Valley has advised clients on protein and antibody therapeutics at all stages of product development. His work with medium-and large-sized pharmaceutical companies has included global prosecution strategy beginning at the clinical trial stage.

In addition, as bench science increasingly involves advances in electrical and computer arts, Dr. Valley also actively prepares and prosecutes patent applications in computer, electrical, and mechanical arts. Dr. Valley’s patent work has covered such diverse technical areas as pharmaceuticals, medical diagnostics and medical devices, food and beverage products, optical sensors, semiconductors, electronics, automotive technologies, hygiene products, organic synthesis methods, plastics and polymers, computer software, and manufacturing equipment.

Prior to his legal career, Dr. Valley researched epigenetic mechanisms of gene silencing on the inactive X chromosome in mammalian genomes at Duke University. In his research efforts, he developed skills in various scientific disciplines such as microarrays, molecular biology, biochemistry, microscopy, cytochemistry, tissue culture, column chromatography, genomics, bioinformatics, and sequencing techniques.
