Naomi Mae is a Senior Adviser with the Grüneberg and Myers team. Ms. Mae promotes linguistic, legal, and technical understanding between Japanese companies and the firm. Her backgrounds in biosciences and Japanese patent practice position her uniquely to share the perspective of many Japanese patent professionals, especially in biotechnology and chemical fields.

Ms. Mae has worked for over 25 years in several patent firms in Tokyo, first as a patent engineer and then as a Japanese patent attorney. During this time, she has also served as a technical advisor of the Intellectual Property High Court for intellectual property lawsuits in Japan. She has worked with patent matters in diverse technical areas including biosciences, organic chemistry, inorganic chemistry, medicinal chemistry, and food science.

Prior to her career in patent law, Ms. Mae developed her scientific expertise as a researcher, first at Mitsubishi-Kasei Institute of Life Sciences in Tokyo and then at Hoffmann-La Roche in New Jersey. These Japanese and American research experiences, combined with her scientific degrees from both Japan Women’s University in Tokyo and the George Washington University in Washington, DC, enable Ms. Mae to bridge cultures and languages to communicate the intricacies of the most complex inventions.
