The firm has an open position for an experienced Patent Attorney or Patent Agent with substantial experience in patent prosecution related to polymers and specialty chemicals. We are also looking for an experienced Intellectual Property Specialist to join our team.

intuitively understanding chemical structures and properties, especially in polymer science
considering all angles of a situation to construct optimal strategies for clients’ IP portfolios
applying complex IP legal principles in practical ways

Your work at our firm would likely include, among other things:
prosecuting US patent applications at all stages, from filing to issuance, primarily in chemical technologies
advocating persuasively for clients’ interests before Patent Examiners and Administrative Patent Judges
counseling clients on a wide range of issues including prosecution strategy, freedom-to-operate issues, cost optimization, and recent developments in US patent practice
working the hours necessary to satisfy the responsibilities of the position
taking initiative in other tasks, which may involve contributing to firm visibility in the legal community, interfacing with visiting clients from overseas, supporting the firm’s business development efforts, and collaborating on special IP projects

Must-haves:
5-10 years of chemical patent prosecution experience, preferably in a law firm
registration number for practicing patent prosecution with the US Patent and Trademark Office
license as a member in good standing with any US state bar (if an attorney)
PhD in chemistry, chemical engineering, or a closely-related field
English-language fluency
proficiency with Microsoft Office
eligibility to work in the US
availability to work full-time in our office in Tysons, Virginia (must also be able to work productively from home while concerns around COVID-19 persist)

Your work at our firm would likely include, among other things:
preparing and filing U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) filings, often including multiple documents, in the USPTO’s Patent Center filing system. Filings include new patent applications, responses to office actions, application data sheets, and requests for correction of USPTO data
satisfying due dates based on patent office mail and incoming client communications
drafting letters and emails to be sent to clients and foreign counsel
working the hours necessary to satisfy the responsibilities of the position
taking initiative in other tasks, which may involve marketing and event planning, asking USPTO officials by telephone about the status of clients’ patent applications, booking and organizing travel itineraries, or collaborating on special IP projects
